Below 54 London Review
Below 54 is situated in the basement of the Great Eastern Dining Room. How you are meant to know this having no visible signs or recognition of any kind, I do not know. The stairs down to it are even hidden behind the upstairs bar. So I am telling you now, there is a bar that exists called Below 54 and it is a very good chilled out one at that.
It is a comfortable 'below the ground' bar, set with low lighting, black leather pouffes and a chilled 'n trendy atmosphere. Funky music plays at volume, yet in the background, with an endless list of cocktails and spirits on offer. The Great Eastern Dining Room bar upstairs is a lot more crowded and noisy compared to this luxurious basement bar.
Below 54 is the perfect venue to chill with a group of friends on the pouffes and comfy chairs. On two sides of the wall video works are played over and over, adding another interesting addition to the surroundings. These club visuals brighten up the dim lighting of the bar, with a program of works changing every couple of weeks.
Although the selection of bar snacks available are limited, you've always got the restaurant housed upstairs. Being suitably impressed with Below 54, it is a shame however that it seems to be unheard of. But perhaps this is the success of it, as it is not taken over and crowded with commercial folk that some of the other bars in the vicinity have had to entertain.
With just the one bar lit with cylindrical lights, it gets fairly busy late on in the night, with the usual Hoxton crew dominating. Open just thursdays to sundays, Below 54 is a bar that people in the Shoreditch area should definitely know about.

“We organised a private party here on Friday 5th of Feb. The events team ensured everything was perfect and the night exceeded all our guest's expectations as well as our own. Fantastically friendly staff and extremely fashionable bar with great seating. The use of a projector just added to the ambiance of the night with a personal slide-show.
Well done Below 54!”

“I was here with friends last Friday & had a fantastic time. All the right things were right! Cocktails, service, food & music. They were launching a 'funky disco' dj theme so we had a whale of a time - lots of laughs with the bartenders & most important of all a multitude of disco lovelies leaving us with trouser tremors all round! GO!”

“Went here on a Thursday in March 04 and will definitely return: Thursday nights host live video DJs - not that I could really tell that the video was being mixed live - that accompanied a fantastically-crafted DJ set of house and electro. Had I not heard it with my own ears, I wouldn't have thought that the two genres could sound so complimentary and seamless, so hats off to the DJ for keeping the East vibe, but injecting some funky flavours to keep the mood upbeat. Another nice thing about this place is the abundance of sofas; in a commercial world in which bars try to cram in punters by removing seats in favour of having standing room only, it's refreshing to visit a bar that's trendy 'and' actually makes it easy to sit down and have some banter. The last important feature is the low lighting, which combined with the sofas makes Below 54 an ideal venue for a date and smooch! Personally, the low lighting would make me hesitate from spending too long here on a Friday or Saturday - I find that places that are a bit too dark tend to chill me out so much that I lose the party mood!”
