Browns Restaurant & Bar London Review
Browns Restaurant & Bar is featured in these Guides:
Canary Wharf usually comes up more often in conversations about banking than dining. However, a brasserie and bar in a convenient spot by the water at West India Quay means fine food and drink is starting to make a name for itself too.
Although part of a chain, every branch of Browns has its own unique character. This one in E14 is on the site of a former sugar warehouse. The result is low ceilings that give and intimate and relaxed feel. And yet, even at the busiest times neither the brasserie nor the bar feel too crowded.
There’s so much to enjoy on the food front. To get started it’s well worth trying one of the range of flatbreads which are generously sized and loaded with tempting toppings such as garlic, rocket and parmesan or spicy beef and mushroom. Another warm-up dish to get the taste buds going is the crab and avocado salad. The juicy crab meat is mixed with crème fraîche – giving the dish a creaminess that isn’t too heavy – and the avocado was so ripe it melted in the mouth.
A wealth of mains will give even the fussiest of diners plenty to ponder but if you’re a bit of a carnivore at heart then the excellent Browns bacon cheeseburger is a must. It helped the place make its name and ticks all the boxes on the quality burger list. The patty is generous and was cooked just as ordered; the bun was floury and appetising in its own right; and the streaky bacon and Emmental are luxurious flourishes to round off the experience satisfyingly. Even the chips were packed with potato flavour (you could see flecks of potato skin).
There is an excellent drinks menu to help your food slip down. One to recommend from the wine list is the Cape Mentelle cabernet merlot from Australia. It manages to be easy drinking but with enough body to bring it to life on the palate.
As this establishment shows, you don’t have to work in a bank in Canary Wharf to feel like a million dollars.

Browns Restaurant & Bar London Description
Browns West India Quay, is situated in this developing area of London's Docklands. It is accessible by the Docklands Light Railway at West India Quay or from Canary Wharf via a footbridge.
West India Quay as its name suggests took ships and cargo from the Caribbean. The restaurant is housed in a sugar warehouse, built in the early nineteenth century by Napoleonic Prisoners of War. It has the lowest ceilings of any Browns, witness to the fact that sugar because of its weight could only be stored to a height of 8 feet!
There are over 200 seats on the ground floor - the bar is on the lower floor. In the bar drinks may be purchased together with a choice from their normal menu. On the front of the restaurant and overlooking the dock there is more seating for diners where again the full Browns menu is served.
