Janet's Bar London Review

Janet's Bar is featured in these Guides:

Beneath the Brompton Hotel, Janet’s Bar is quite unlike anything else in this part of London. From Old Brompton Road, look out for the huge sign with a cartoon of the proprietor who bears an uncanny resemblance to Wilma from the Flintstones. In the flesh, she’s almost as wacky; a bubbly New Yorker with a real sense of fun who’s decked out the venue in her own fabulous style – gilded mirrors made out of old spectacles, rollers, hairbrushes and tennis racquets. Pictures of patrons adorn the walls, in varying states of intoxication, as well as fairy lights, neon signs, rickety old fans, Mickey Mouse balloons and I even found a calling card for a taxi firm in Woollacombe. It’s an Aladdin’s cave. Or rather, it’s Janet’s cave.

Staff behind the tiny bar were quick to welcome us to this quirky-kitsch world, which serves up pretty much every spirit you can think of, plus a selection of wines and spirits at OK prices. If you’re feeling peckish, they also have menus from several local restaurants, including sushi, pizza and Argentinean fare, which they’ll order for you and bring to your table.

There’s a cute little terrace at the front, plus soulful live music twice a night, seven days a week. Whether you drop in for a couple of cheeky ones later in the evening or hire out the place for a party, Janet’s Bar will do its best to make you feel at home. Whether you’d want your home to be anything like this curious place is another matter entirely… Sarah Elliott (17 09 2005)

“Most unique bar in London- I am not surprised it won an award for 'Best Bar in Kensington and Chelsea'! The drinks were great and I loved the crowd who were all cool, interesting and friendly. It has loads of quirky surprises- for example free hot dogs with your cocktails!”

“Count me in!! I brought a bunch of my friends here - we LOVED it - what a cool bar - GO JANET! GO JANET! We had martinis and Silver Streaks - really tasty. Booked my BF's 25th at the bar - live music, hot dogs and martinis. Also loved the staff-completely eclectic - Poles, Surfers, Irish singers, and The Janet - an American who is a cross between Sharon Stone and Dolly Parton!”

“Janet's Bar is the best bar in London! We had a spontaneous party of school and uni friends last night and everyone showed up from Charterhouse. Eton, Radley, Oxford, Edinburgh, Bristol, and more. Janet treated us royally-live music, Easter sweeties, hot dogs and the bar put us all in a splendid mood. This started off the Easter weekend brilliantly and we are going back Sunday night. Janet's daughter's godfather is often up from the country and he is a hilarious old school gentleman who adds to the festivities. This is the only bar in South Ken where everyone is welcome equally-just don't complain about prices because Janet has so many loyal customers that you will look silly. You get a lot for the money...”

“This place never fails to impress me. The drinks are excellent and my friends and I love singing along to the live music while socialising with fellow customers and sipping on the delicious cocktails! This is my favourite bar in London as one has a unique experience ever time you go! Also janet is hilarious!”

“I have never had a bad night in janet's because you never know what you're going to get. Go in with a sense of humour and expect the unexpected. The drinks are like the bar staff tall slim and tasty and the music rocks”

“Had a fabulous evening at Janet's Bar-went with 10 friends-the cocktails were yummy and the music great! Janet is really cool and VERY smart. All the young people go in to speak to her-the place is alwas packed-Janet knows how to pick barmaids-they all are fun. The last review seems to be a lie because there are no barmen and the only way there would be 1 drunk in the bar on a Friday night is if people are still at work. This bar is not for people who "don't get it"-it is a one-off, very cool, bar with a sense of humour-that is the point.”

“This place is without a doubt one of the worst cocktail bars (or any kind of bar!) I have ever visited. I went there on a Friday evening and the place was deserted apart from one drunk. The ‘kooky’ decorations just looked tired and dusty. The bar was sticky, the menus covered in spilt drink, the floor dirty and the toilets utterly horrific. And worst of all, our cocktails were terrible – made with little skill or knowledge, and in my case, omitting one of the main ingredients! When I complained the barman didn’t seem to understand why it was a problem that he’d used Vodka instead of Amaretto. Utterly awful.”

“At £6.50 for a gin & tonic, you can forget it. When we asked to have the bill of £29 for 1 x gin & tonic, 2 x rum & cokes and a daiquiri broken down the staff tried to justify it with free music and the fact it was a singles bar. We didn't know it was a singles bar and if you're charging £6.50 for a single G & T, it's not free music. It's got a nice boho vibe but the drinks came in plastic glasses.”

“Back to Janet's Bar yet again. This is the funkiest and fun bar in London and I am always happy to bring a group of friends here. The prices are typical South Kensington but the atmosphere, drinks and music are worth it! You will look very cool to suggest this bar to your friends.”

“I'm a big cocktail fan and a friend recommended janets bar. So i went, expecting to sit down and have a really good cocktail. I was surprised when i was there as I had so much more than a great cocktail: the atmosphere was so original, unlike any other bar i've been to; and the bar girls and regulars were very warm and friendly.”

“What fun! Had a blast last night at Janet's - very cool crowd that is also 'nice' and friendly. Prices are typical South Ken but who cares? It is worth it-ambiance different than any bar in London and you feel welcome! Tip - don't complain that prices are cheaper in a pub because you will look silly! It isn't a pub and frankly, no-one cares.”

“janet is great fun however the staff are rude, male obsessed little so and so's who should go back to their own countries.”

“Just to point out, regarding annab's review, that Janet's husband, David, passed away some time ago. As for the joint, it has its moments so atmosphere can be unique- just expect south Kensington prices- you're in South Kensington!”

“The owner and staff are really friendly and cool! This bar is about value for money but not about price - you get value for money in its uniqueness, no entrance or cover for live music, friendliness and fun! You need a good sense of humour and don't worry about the cost of drinks - they are doubles!”

“Tourist trap - £ 3.85 for a mini bottle (2.75 ml) of Fosters!”

“This place is pretty unique; it’s relaxed, down to earth and individual. The walls are covered with pictures of the regulars, press cuttings and cartoons of the licensee Janet. There’s a little raised terrace out the front that is great in the summer and where you might get embroiled conversation with Janet’s husband. The drinks menu isn’t extensive, but this doesn’t really matter and as for food, well they’ll phone you in a pizza!”
