Jetlag London Review

As a writer some people expect you to know everything. We’re not humans. No, no. We’re perfect alien ‘know it alls’ running about the city like encyclopedic vigilantes, always having a quiet knowingness about everything under the sun.

NOOOOT!

There is a reason why we go places. Amongst other things it’s to find out information we don’t already possess. Or at least confirm it. This will inform us enough to do the best job we can. So trying to impress me with the latest this, thats, whos, hows and whats in the industry ain’t gonna do it, sorry. So, the question is what does impress me? A good evening, where mutual respect is a shared pleasure, that’s what. And since you, our readers, are my customers - who also don’t know everything, but need an honest opinion - it is with great joy that I take pride in my unpretentious not-knowing-everything self.

Jetlag’s USP is to bring an international flair to a contemporary setting. The food and drink follow this theme, and are done well. It was quite apt, then, that by the time we arrived the Boeing had gone over (South African for “it was time for a drink”), and our tanks needed fuel, badly! We got on board and ordered our drinks, made by the charming, courteous bartending mixology genius. Naturally, we went VIP first class, starting off in Mexico with a generous endorsement of that ingredient called booze, thus removing any jetlag I might’ve had. We had no regrets in merrily making our way around the world from there (oh, what a drag!) to Ireland, New Zealand, Thailand, Greece and Jamaica. Despite the fact that we didn’t make it into outer space, the cocktails really were out of this world.

The Jetlag theme travels throughout the establishment, with bubble walls in the bar downstairs (sadly tainted with tacky toy smurfs and plastic animal adornments – resembling some kind of baby’s bath) and even a couple of business class airline seats in one corner. We moved our way through the crowd, which ranged from the more mature upstairs to the baby faced downstairs.

Perhaps it was the toy bath bubble walls or Wii and big screen downstairs that attracted the buzzing school leavers. To Wii or not to Wii? That is the question. Considering my bling bling princess shoes with matching top, watch and earrings, I was hardly correctly attired for playing sport (I had every intention of dancing the night away under some thunderous beats, though), I chose not to Wii, but found great delight in observing those who were obviously regulars to the scene. A very nifty touch, the Wii, and when not in use, there’s also movies and sports. All sorts.

As can sometimes be with new establishments, there were some teething problems to note. Although undisputedly fantastic 90’s to noughties music was being played, there were moments that came close to an awkward silence, but for the voices around me. Plus, despite feeling first class all the way, I was disappointed that my bling blinginess was not put to good use, as there was no opportunity to be a dancing queen. A DJ on a Saturday night is on the cards, and something I look forward to. So let’s not chuck that teething baby out with the bathwater just yet (well, I don’t mind if the smurfs and animals get chucked).

The bar is undoubtedly coming into its own, and in the words of Nick, one of many bachelors on a stag night before the big day: “despite smelling like a swimming pool, I’ll definitely be back”.

It is true, I may not know everything. But what I do know is a good thing when I see it. With drinks to die for and passionate staff, there is only one way for Jetlag to go from take-off: upwards. I’ll be back – this time with pumps on.

Loved

"Kyashii is a fantastic restaurant. With an excellent central location and an intimate, but very classy interior, it was a pleasure to dine here, especially next to the built in wall fish tanks. The Champagne..." Which venue is this?

Hated

"Firstly the location, don't come here unless you like parking at the back of a dodgy industrial estate and hunting for the restaurant amongst blocks of flats. We arrived for our meal and were told there..." Which venue is this?
