Kisse Bar London Review

Before you go on, I have to state: it’s pronounced “kiss-eh”. You know how Italians always add an ‘a’ vowel at the end of nearly every word they say? Well, pretend you are Italian, but add an ‘eh’ sound instead, got it? Good. And it means Pussy Cat in Swedish (preferably say that in a slow, baritone voice which the manager professionally demonstrated, as it works better).

Kisse is a very cute, romantic and intimate bar-cum-restaurant tucked somewhere in the middle of Clapham. What hits you first is how chilled it is, the outdoor seating being the ultimate chic accessory nowadays; it’s inner artsy décor, penthouse style lighting and James Bond sleek slim TV’s, shiny tables, chairs and stools are deceiving to how cosy the place actually is. It’s actually made for cats, I am convinced: with all the lounging-style lighting, cat pictures splayed across the walls and lighting that makes your eyes dilate like fire.

With cocktails such as the in-house-only Metrosexual (a sweet blend of Jack Daniels and some tasty Turquoise liquor), the traditional Mai Tais (made so we wish we were in Thailand) and a crisp house white (that only comes at around £6 a bottle), this watering hole is made to please, feed and last.

Serving bar food, ranging from salads to grills to rainbow trout (must be a reason why it was pink?). They even have icy profiteroles (although they arrived a bit too cool for our liking) on the dessert menu; you don’t have to fret that you may be stuck with something like Nachos the whole night. (What am I saying? - I was very close to taking the Nachos from the table next to me they looked so good).

If you ask nicely (because the staff are so nice), there is also the option of shisha if the place hasn’t driven you to the ground with its slinky-feline attitude. Such a great atmosphere, television and even classy music to boot, I would not mind being the puss in here. (Albeit the scavenger, street wise type) Purrrrrrr…. Rebecca Gabbai (01 05 2005)
