Ruby Blue London Review

Book a table at Ruby Blue

Ruby Blue is featured in these Guides:

It's just my luck to arrive on the night where the ratio of women to men was virtually100:1- it’s someone's hen-night. Additionally, it was dinner with my brother tonight - my brother in a bad mood, the scene is set and seems a bit grey. So if I enjoy tonight, this place must have some colourful substance, and Ruby Blue, with its combination of bar, restaurant & club, did shine…

Walking into the restaurant, it's hard to watch my step as I'm distracted by some heavenly, extraterrestrial looking woven balls that are acting as light shades. As I sit and wait for my brother to arrive, I am surprised to hear something reminiscent of Michael Bublé singing behind me - live. So I turn and see a white grand piano, a delicately swaying chandelier and a stranger tinkling away with a bottle of Stella on display next to him. I turn back to my table. Sometimes the imagination plays tricks on you, and tonight, I decide I don't want reality to interrupt.

I have a while to wait until I can order, those of you with brothers of the high-maintenance kind will understand me when I say I decided to strike up conversation with the preppy waitress to pass some of the time. Once I've stopped her in her busy tracks, I ask her about the specials of the house: the menu is like an impressionist painting, although the words only amount to a huge blur under the cosmic light. She smiles and exclaims: "Why there are so many good things" and as she leans over to read the menu, even I'm slightly excited. "We'll begin with the Starters" she says, I'm glad I got the talker, but before I can rejoice she proceeds to read me the menu word by word, line by line. Talk about loyalty to the restaurant, I have to interrupt when she tries to start with the Main Courses as well. I'm already salivating, my brother has arrived and I believe she must be thirsty.

The food is laudable, the garlic mozzarella starter is nothing but more appetizing. When the thinly sliced salmon and the calamari arrive, it is hard to believe that the main course can impress much more. But it does, I love lamb, I love potato au gratin and I love it even more when it's grilled to shine and sparkle. My brothers mixed grill seems like a good hangover cure, and I'm wondering if I'll be back here after having more of the tasty Russian cocktails and visiting the club downstairs (during happy hour of course!). Again, those massive alien lights really are beyond description, I was amazed and from time to time when I got tedious of seeing the earthly food, hearing the cackling women and improvising on depression conversation- they were the perfect digression

The Ruby club is pumping already at 9, and it's a buoyant atmosphere as everyone seems to be part of the wedding, so it's festive and it's nice to see everyone smiling in a club for a change. But it was the dinner that caught my heart, being comfortable always completes a night for me, so I go off home dreaming of Rubies, Russians and lights… Rebecca Gabbai (23 03 2005)

“I booked the restaurant for my 30th birthday and got seated in the bar! It was cold as doors were open either end of the bar, high-vis jackets worn by security parading around (not very sophisticated), staff were rude when we asked to be moved into the restaurant (where we had booked a month in advance)! A place to go if you want your night ruined.”

“Food was average at best. Drinks overpriced, but plenty of opportunities to pull.”

“Some friends and I went to this awful bar to celebrate another friends birthday recently. We arrived around 9.30 so that we could take advantage of the happy hour and also because we were told to arrive by that time by the event co-ordinator as we had compiled a guest list for this particular friends birthday. On arrival we were made to wait in a queue that consisted of just us - obviously a ploy to make us pay the entrance fee that applied after 10pm. Then we were asked for passports for i.d to enter the club even though we were a mixed group of 25-30 somethings. Then they messed up the guest list claiming only half the no of people could go in. Management were even ruder than the door staff and extremely argumentative. Do not go unless you want your night to be ruined. Ruby blue will NEVER have my custom and I would seriously urge people NOT to book there - you are paying money for a service and in this industry there is no room for incompetence and seriously bad hospitality. There are much better clubs and bars just down the road in Piccadily and Mayfair where they know how to treat patrons!”

“Fantastic night out! Great crowd and brilliant atmosphere. Very friendly and happy staff. Would recommend booking a booth as it acts as a great base for your party and is great value for money at £25. Very stylish venue!!”

“What a surprise! After reading a few dodgy reviews, i was slightly hesitant about attending a friends Birthday here. I was running slightly late, and was happily meet at the door by the very polite hostesss who took me directly to join the rest of my party. The meal itself was delicious and extremley great value for money. We then moved to the very stylish bar to continue our night where we were served quickly and with a smile by the bar staff. There was a such great atmosphere a we all had such a fantastic evening. I shall be booking again!!”

“Pity about the terrible service… Ruby Blue seemed like a good choice for a quick, easy meal before a show. As a latenightlondon venue I knew what to expect…. nothing too fancy - just decent food at good prices during a happy hour. Oh dear – what a mistake I made choosing here! The service at this place really isn’t up to scratch. Things started to go wrong when we tried to book. We asked for booth for 6 people, only to be told that you can’t book booths for dinner (which is incorrect – you can book booths!). When we arrived we were placed on a table that would struggle to seat 4 people comfortably – even though the restaurant was practically empty and there were at least 4 other tables (and booths!) set and available. On asking if we could move to one of these we were informed that these had been booked for parties arriving at 8:30 pm – the fact that we had theatre tickets for 8pm and would have left way before the time the tables were needed made no difference to the staff – “they may arrive early” we were told. I’m sorry, but who arrives an hour early for a dinner reservation and expects that their table will be held open for them? Certainly no one that I know! The next hurdle was ordering. Ruby Blue, like most latenightlondon venues has happy hour food and drink prices between 5-7pm. From the happy hour menus (given to us on our tiny table in the restaurant) we started by selecting a bottle of red wine. After ordering the waitress returned to tell us that the bott”

“if only i could give this place 0 out of 5 stars... myself and two others turned up at quarter to ten for a friends birthday. we were guest listed and everything, yet the bouncers (who were the MOST UNFRIENDLY and ultimately the MOST RUDE AND ABUSIVE i have ever met) started power tripping and telling us we werent welcome because they could smell alcohol on our breath. what kind of reason is that? who doesnt have a beer or two before going into a club?! the manageress comes to discuss with us and is downright rude, and basically tells us that we're a liability and a danger to her club. at no point in our discussion did we even raise our voice, instead choosing to discuss the flaws in her logic. ultimately she told us to come back later and try again (a blatant ploy to get us to all pay the extortionate £10 entry fee) because it was our friends birthday we went away for a coffee and came back an hour later like they suggested only to be told to f off by the bouncers. in summary, this place is the WORST 0/5”

“The service was awful. Took 4 hours for 12 of us to have a meal on the preset party menu. 6 starters and 8 main courses were incorrectly served. They had run out of chicken but didn't tell us before serving the food so we had to eat what we were given instead! Were given two free bottles of wine - they gave us house wine having told us earlier that they had run out so that we had to buy more expensive wine! The atmosphere and food quality were good but the Manager didn't apologize and the service was the worse I have ever experienced.”

“I went to ruby blue on a Friday night, and let you tell you the atmosphere was really live. At first the music there was a little old skool but as the night progressed the music started to get really good. The only downside of this place... and this is a warning to any girls that come here is that the barmen are creeps they really try it on! and lets face it they may seem to be all over you when you're there for that particular night but you got to remember that they work there every week.. so you can imagine how many gals they are trying to chirp and its not just you trust me! but yeh it is ok i guess been better places though.”

“After your review we thought we'd try out what it was like anyway as I used to go there quite often when it was Havana. Much to our suprise, we noticed that the venue has infact gone through a refurbishment. The General Manager (who was a women and not the guy you mentioned in the review) was really cool and was working the door that night. The staff were full of smiles and the new decor gave the whole place a lighter feel. The drinks were'nt as expensive as we thought and the bar snacks were great. Maybe you should update your review? It looks like it has'nt been updated in about 3 years. ”

“Had a fab night at your club, music was spot on, lots of dancing and good atmosphere. My mate fell deeply, madly in love with your Dave Beckham lookalike barman, could'nt get her away from him, she was the one who harrased the bouncers at the door, then ended up leaving her mobile with the female cloakroom assistant by the door, sorry, but my mates usually quite picky who she decides to fancy, so it quite shocked me that she made a fool of herself, which made her cringe in the morning. Anyway back to my review, it was an ace night out, bouncers were very efficient and even escorted us to our awaiting taxi. thank you. Sue and Julie, North Wales.”

“On entrance, Red Cube looked to be an exclusive, elite type of place, mysterious and promising to give excitement. The bouncer on the door asked how many there was in my party, then nodded us through (as if it would have made any difference to three pretty young things such as myself and my friends, haha!). I was quite excited about what would be on the inside, but that went out the window when I had to pay £10 (give me a BREAK!!), only to find myself walking into the dingiest (word?...) place I've ever been in. The music was crap, and the clientele consisted of boring-looking snobs and pervy businessmen - it only took two minutes to have my arse felt by one, oh yes. I can't say much else about the place except it felt like being in some underground strip-club with practically no lighting, and slightly less nakedness. My advice? Just don't!”

“As a first time out in London, we only wanted to stay a couple of hours in this place. Drinks (I'm told) we VERY expensive, although I found the surroundings very nice. There was a small food menu, but couldn't actually read it as there was only a tealight candle for lighting. VIP rooms were a minimum £500 spend (negotiable, I'm told) and looking at them, I don't think they were worth it. Music did jump about a bit, a couple of times it stopped in the middle of a track and restarted with something completely different! I did get the feeling that myself, my boyfriend and the three others we were with were rather unwelcome. I think it maybe a place for z-list celebs....”

“Think footballers wives. Think guys that attract footballers wives. Think guys that fancy footballers wives. Then put them into a Red Cube and throw that Cube over a cliff. That's what I call a good night! Oh, and don't forget to put their annoying 'give me some money or you'll feel guilty all night', hand-towel offering, perfume spraying toilet monkey in there too.”

Loved

"Kyashii is a fantastic restaurant. With an excellent central location and an intimate, but very classy interior, it was a pleasure to dine here, especially next to the built in wall fish tanks. The Champagne..." Which venue is this?

Hated

"Firstly the location, don't come here unless you like parking at the back of a dodgy industrial estate and hunting for the restaurant amongst blocks of flats. We arrived for our meal and were told there..." Which venue is this?
