Hammersmith is unfortunatley a part of London dominated by the flyover and huge roundabout, serving the feed to the M4, leaving a feeling of an an area in which you want to pass through as quickly as possible (rarely happens). Fortunately Hammersmith also lies on the Thames and offers some fantastic pubs and restaurants on the river. There are also hidden gems a little bit further from the centre.

You may be forgiven for thinking of Battersea as that in between nowhere area with the only famous landmarks being 'Battersea Power Station' and 'Battersea Dogs Home'. Due to being the site for the graves of Plague victims many centuries ago, the Victorians gave the Battersea area a wide birth when building the underground. This has left the area a tad difficult to reach, but those living there don't mind, they get to keep all those great pubs, bars & restaurants around Battersea to themselves!

As a bit of trivia: a “cock” in 19th century America was a tap and the last muddy dregs of the tap was its “tail”. Apparently a certain Colonel Carter in Virginia was served this insult in his local tavern, whereupon he dashed it upon the floor and pronounced “Hereafter I will drink cocktails of my own brewing!” He did just that and concocted up a mix of gin, lemon peel, bitters and sugar – the birth of the cocktail.

A recent trend has seen many of London's traditional old time pubs being ripped out and replaced by retro-bars, gastro-pubs, theme pubs and the like. Now many of them had certainly reached their shelf life and improvement was definitaly needed, but there may still be some of you that like frequenting these Dick Turpinesk dens. There is a certain appeal from the complete unpretentiousness on offer, simply drifting into the bar anonomously and having the, if your lucky, extensive menu of beer and chips, and even shaing a converstaion with the old timers propping up the bar sippping their pint of 'real ale' slowly over the course of an evening. Sadly like the dodo they are slowly becoming extinct...
